The Home Visit: Fundamental Activity of Vincentian Ministry

Visiting families in their homes is the most basic and fundamental activity of a Vincentian. The goal is to develop a relationship between the Vincentian and the person who has asked for help. This relationship is not a simple humanitarian or philanthropic relationship, but aims at forming or strengthening a relationship between the individual and God.
The booklet The Home Visit: Helping People Where They Live provides a five-part examination of the most basic Vincentian activity.

Restoring Hope

The individuals we serve often find themselves in desperate situations. They come from all walks of life: people who unexpectedly lost their jobs, single mothers who have fled abusive situations, and elderly people on a fixed income who have exhausted their savings after a medical emergency.
Listening to them and showing them that we care often restores their hope. We often pray with them or let them know that we will keep them in our prayers. This spiritual support and the person-to-person contact frequently makes a big difference and gives them the strength to keep going.

Providing Food Assistance

We provide food boxes with nutritious foods that serve a family for about a week. In the last years, the economy has increased the number of food requests. We are currently the largest food provider in Tempe, delivering food to approximately 100 families per month. Most of the food comes from our central facility in downtown Phoenix and the United Food Bank, but we also partner with local stores. Thank you for participating in our parish food drives and placing food items in the collection bins at the north and south entrances of the Church.
If you have time to help pick up food from various locations or to deliver food, give us a call. All you need is a car, a partner, and a friendly smile. We will provide the training you need to help our needy brothers and sisters.

Offering Financial Assistance

We help families at risk of becoming homeless by offering financial assistance for rent and utilities. It is our largest expense. We collaborate with the Tempe Community Action Agency and The Salvation Army. We sometimes also give free vouchers for gently used clothing and bus passes.
If you can extend a helping hand to those who are in need of financial assistance, please consider donating to our conference. Send a check to St. Vincent de Paul Society at OLMC, 2121 S. Rural Road, Tempe, AZ 85282. We also have blue donation envelopes at the back of the Church. Any amount, large or small, is greatly appreciated. Thank you for the generous sacrifices that you make to help the most vulnerable in our area.
